Supposedly, no. However a shield like a Zagg isn't that expensive and offers really good protection. There is also one for the back of the iPad which the smart cover doesn't protect.

I was thinking since the iPad smart cover was intentionally for the the new iPad 2, will the iPad smart cover fit my old iPad?

Nope they won't because the smart covers uses magnets to cling(attach) to the new iPad that also has magnets inside it. But your old iPad doesn't have it so it won't. Visit iskin.com they have really good skins for the old iPad too.
